Terms of Service

These terms ("Terms") govern your use of the FocalReader browser extension and the focalreader.com website (together, the "Service"). By installing the extension or visiting the website, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. Who we are

FocalReader is built and operated by Ajit Soni (the "Developer" / "we" / "us"). You can reach us at support@focalreader.com.

2. License to use the extension

We grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use FocalReader for your own personal or internal business reading purposes, subject to these Terms. You may not:

• Copy, modify, reverse engineer, or disassemble the extension except to the extent permitted by law.
• Re-distribute, sell, rent, sublicense, or host the extension yourself.
• Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or attribution notices.
• Use the extension to violate someone else's rights or any applicable law.

3. Pricing, Explain (AI), and Pro

FocalReader's reading and focus features are free. The optional Explain (AI) feature includes a limited number of free explanations per day (currently 5). For unlimited explanations you can subscribe to Pro for $4.99 per month (or the price shown at checkout). We may change the free allowance or the price; any change to your subscription price applies only to future billing periods, and we'll give reasonable notice.

4. Subscriptions, billing, and cancellation

Pro is a recurring monthly subscription processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as our merchant of record and handles payment, billing, and any applicable taxes. Your subscription auto-renews each month until you cancel. You can cancel anytime; your Pro access continues until the end of the current paid period and you won't be charged again. We never receive or store your card details.

5. Refunds

If Pro isn't working out, email support@focalreader.com — we offer a no-questions-asked refund of your most recent payment. Refunds are issued through Lemon Squeezy.

6. Accounts

Using Pro requires signing in with your email address. You're responsible for keeping access to that email and for activity under your account, which is for one person's use. We may suspend or terminate accounts that abuse the Service — for example, attempting to bypass usage limits or security.

7. Explain (AI) — nature of the output

Explanations are generated automatically by a third-party AI model. They may be inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date, and are provided for convenience only — not as professional, medical, legal, financial, or academic advice. Verify anything important against the original source. Don't paste content you aren't allowed to share into Explain.

8. Acceptable use

Don't misuse the Service — including attempting to circumvent usage limits or security, overload our infrastructure, resell access, or use Explain (AI) to process unlawful content.

9. Availability and updates

We work to keep the Service running smoothly, but we don't guarantee it will always be available, bug-free, or compatible with every website or browser. We may release updates that change or remove features at our discretion. AI features depend on third-party providers and may occasionally be unavailable.

10. Your content and privacy

The core features don't store or transmit the content of the pages you read. When you use Explain (AI), only the paragraph you choose is sent to our provider to generate the explanation. See our Privacy Policy for full details on what data is handled and how.

11. Disclaimer

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. FocalReader is a reading aid. It is not a medical device and doesn't diagnose or treat any condition.

12. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE DEVELOPER WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR BUSINESS, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE TOTAL FEES YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) $20.

This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

13. Termination

You can stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the extension, and you can cancel Pro or ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if required by law. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (licenses granted to us, limitations of liability, governing law) will survive.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of India , without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located there for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms, subject to any mandatory consumer-protection laws of your place of residence.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top. If the changes are material, we'll give reasonable advance notice through the extension or via email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
