Terms of Service

These terms ("Terms") govern your use of the FocalReader browser extension, the focalreader.com website, and the optional FocalReader Pro subscription (together, the "Service"). By installing the extension, visiting the website, or subscribing to Pro, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. Who we are

FocalReader is built and operated by Ajit Soni (the "Developer" / "we" / "us"). You can reach us at support@focalreader.com.

2. License to use the extension

We grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use FocalReader for your own personal or internal business reading purposes, subject to these Terms. You may not:

• Copy, modify, reverse engineer, or disassemble the extension except to the extent permitted by law.
• Re-distribute, sell, rent, sublicense, or host the extension yourself.
• Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or attribution notices.
• Use the extension to violate someone else's rights or any applicable law.

3. FocalReader Pro subscription

The free tier is free forever. The Pro tier (which includes Smart Window and future Pro-only features) is available as a monthly or annual subscription with an optional 7-day free trial. Payment is processed by our payment provider ExtensionPay (using Stripe).

Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel before the renewal date. You can cancel at any time from the "Manage subscription" link in the extension's Settings page, or directly via the ExtensionPay portal. After cancellation, you retain Pro access through the end of your current billing period.

4. Free trial

If offered, the free trial runs for 7 days from the day it's activated. To start a trial you must provide an email address. Only one trial is allowed per email. At the end of the trial, Pro features lock unless you subscribe.

5. Refunds

Because Pro is a small-value digital subscription and you can cancel at any time, we generally do not offer refunds mid-period — unused time is simply not renewed at the next billing cycle. That said, if you're charged accidentally or the subscription genuinely didn't work for you, email us at support@focalreader.com within 14 days of the charge and we'll review it case by case.

Where required by your local consumer protection laws (for example in the EU/UK), your statutory refund rights are unaffected by the above.

6. Price changes

We may change subscription prices from time to time. Current subscribers keep their existing plan price unless we give you reasonable notice (at least 30 days, via email or an in-extension notice) before any increase takes effect. If you don't like a new price, cancel before the change takes effect.

7. Availability and updates

We work to keep the Service running smoothly, but we don't guarantee it will always be available, bug-free, or compatible with every website or browser. We may release updates that change or remove features. For free users, this is at our discretion. For Pro users, we won't remove significant features mid-subscription without either giving you equivalent replacement functionality, reasonable notice, or a refund of any remaining time.

FocalReader doesn't store or transmit the content of the pages you read. See our Privacy Policy for details on what data is handled and how.

9. Disclaimer

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. FocalReader is a reading aid. It is not a medical device and doesn't diagnose or treat any condition.

10. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE DEVELOPER WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR BUSINESS, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE EVENT THAT GAVE RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR $20, WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

11. Termination

You can stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the extension and/or cancelling your subscription. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if required by law. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (licenses granted to us, limitations of liability, governing law) will survive.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of India , without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located there for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms, subject to any mandatory consumer-protection laws of your place of residence.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top. If the changes are material, we'll give reasonable advance notice through the extension or via email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
